Reiki vs Pranic Healing — What's the Difference and Which Is Right for You?

By Roshni Luthra  |  RoshniHealing, The Lakes, Dubai

If you have been exploring energy healing in Dubai, you have probably come across both Reiki and Pranic Healing — and wondered what the difference actually is. Are they the same thing? Is one better than the other? Which one do you need?

As a certified Reiki Grand Master and trained Pranic Healer with over 30 years of experience, I work with both modalities every day at my private studio in The Lakes, Dubai. In this post I want to give you a genuinely clear explanation of how they differ, how they complement each other, and how I decide which approach is right for each client.

"Both Reiki and Pranic Healing work with the body's energy field — but they approach it in quite different ways. Understanding that difference helps you make a more informed choice about your healing journey."

What is Reiki healing?

Reiki is a Japanese energy healing technique developed by Mikao Usui in the early 20th century. The word itself tells you everything: Rei means universal, Ki means life force energy. Together, Reiki means universal life force energy.

During a Reiki session, the practitioner channels this universal energy through their hands — placed lightly on or just above the body — allowing it to flow to wherever it is needed most. Reiki does not follow a fixed protocol. It is intuitive, responsive and deeply personal. The energy goes where it needs to go.

Reiki works simultaneously on four levels:

•   Physical — easing tension, pain and physical fatigue

•   Emotional — releasing stored grief, anxiety and heaviness

•   Mental — calming an overactive mind, reducing stress

•   Spiritual — reconnecting you with a deeper sense of peace and purpose

A Reiki session feels profoundly relaxing. Most clients experience warmth, tingling, a sense of floating, or simply a deep, restful calm. Some experience gentle emotional releases. Many describe it as the most deeply rested they have felt in years.

What is Pranic Healing?

Pranic Healing is a structured, no-touch energy healing system developed by Grand Master Choa Kok Sui. The word Prana comes from Sanskrit and means life force — the same fundamental energy as Ki in Japanese.

Unlike Reiki, Pranic Healing follows a precise, systematic protocol. Every session involves three distinct steps:

•   Scanning — the practitioner reads your energy field to identify areas of congestion, depletion or imbalance

•   Cleansing — stagnant, diseased or congested energy is methodically removed from the aura and chakras

•   Energising — fresh, clean prana is directed to the areas that have been cleansed, accelerating the body's natural ability to heal

There is no physical touch in Pranic Healing. The practitioner works entirely within your energy field — your aura — which extends several inches to several feet beyond your physical body. This makes it particularly suitable for clients who prefer no physical contact, or for distance sessions.

"Think of it this way: if your energy body were a house, Pranic Healing first removes the clutter and cleans the rooms — then lets the fresh air in. Reiki opens the windows and lets the light flow through."

The key differences between Reiki and Pranic Healing

Touch vs no touch

Reiki involves gentle hand placements on or near the body. Pranic Healing is entirely no-touch, working only within the energy field. Both are deeply effective — the choice often comes down to personal preference.

Intuitive vs structured

Reiki is intuitive — the energy flows where it is needed without a fixed sequence. Pranic Healing follows a precise, repeatable protocol for each condition or chakra. Neither approach is superior — they simply serve different purposes.

Cleansing first vs direct channelling

Pranic Healing always begins by removing congested or diseased energy before adding fresh prana. Reiki channels energy directly, trusting the recipient's system to use it as needed. For clients carrying a lot of heavy or blocked energy, the cleansing step in Pranic Healing can be especially powerful.

Session experience

Reiki sessions tend to feel deeply still, warm and meditative. Pranic Healing sessions can sometimes bring more noticeable physical sensations as congested energy is cleared — clients sometimes feel a sense of release, lightness or emotional shifts during the session itself.

Which one is right for you?

This is the question I am most often asked — and the honest answer is that it depends entirely on what you are carrying and what your body and energy need right now.

Reiki tends to be especially supportive when you are:

•   Feeling stressed, anxious or emotionally heavy

•   Going through grief, loss or major life transitions

•   Experiencing burnout or chronic fatigue

•   Seeking deep relaxation and nervous system support

•   New to energy healing and wanting a gentle introduction

Pranic Healing tends to be especially effective when you are:

•   Carrying long-standing energetic blockages or patterns

•   Recovering from illness, conflict or emotional trauma

•   Feeling that your energy field has been affected by other people or environments

•   Wanting a more structured, systematic approach to energy clearing

•   Preferring a no-touch session

"In my experience, the most powerful sessions are often those that combine both — using Pranic Healing to clear and cleanse, then Reiki to replenish and harmonise. Together they go deeper than either practice alone."

Can Reiki and Pranic Healing be combined?

Absolutely — and this is one of the approaches I offer at RoshniHealing. A combined session typically begins with Pranic Healing protocols to systematically cleanse the aura and chakras, removing any heavy or congested energy. This creates space. Then Reiki flows in to replenish, harmonise and bring the entire energy system back into balance.

Clients who experience combined sessions often report that the results feel deeper and more lasting than from either practice individually. The two modalities are genuinely complementary — they work on the same energy system from different angles.

A note on distance healing

Both Reiki and Pranic Healing are equally effective as distance sessions. Energy is not limited by physical space — I regularly work with clients across the UAE, GCC, UK and worldwide via a live video connection. If you are curious about distance healing, I am happy to explain how it works before you book.

How to choose — my suggestion

If you are unsure which modality is right for you, the simplest approach is to reach out directly. A short conversation — via WhatsApp or through my contact page — is usually enough to sense together which direction will support you best right now.

I have been working with both Reiki and Pranic Healing for over 30 years. Every client I see comes with a unique energetic signature, a unique history and unique needs. There is no one-size-fits-all answer — which is precisely why I tailor every session to the individual in front of me.

"You do not need to arrive knowing exactly what you need. That is what the session is for."

Book a session in Dubai or online

Reiki and Pranic Healing sessions are available in person at my private studio in The Lakes, Emirates Living, Dubai, and as distance sessions for clients across the UAE and worldwide.
